Week 2 In Review: Digital Natives(?) and Produsage
This week a lot of my preconceptions about digital natives have very much been put into question. I had very much believed that millenials and Gen Z were digital natives, that our knowledge of and skill with technology was superior to those of Gen X and baby boomers. For me, baby boomers in particular seemed to be all like my mom. My mother is older, in her early 70's and she is not good at picking up new technology at all. She just started texting this year! However, I have definitely now been humbled. In my opinion, the technology that we have now was created by those who are a part of the Gen X and baby boomer generations and it makes sense that they would be able to translate the skills that they acquired with those technologies to modern-day ones. For instance, I got a new laptop at work and the IT guy who came to set it up looked like he was in his 70's. I was a bit wary of him, but he got it set up to our networks and systems flawlessly. I was actually pretty impressed and I thought that he must be one in a million, but I realize now that he isn't. For me personally, I also need to stop having such a big head about "being good with technology." Even though I may work with it every day and studying it in school, there's a lot left to be learned still and it's constantly changing at a faster pace than at any other point in history. I need to be more humble and listen to what those who have worked with technology for an extended period of time have to say.
On to Week 3 and having more preconceived notions about social media and technology smashed!
Sounds like you see it through another lense and conscious of multiple narratives, maybe realities! I'm glad that the IT guy made it, even if he didn't seem so! :) Look forward to reading the next smash!
