Week 5 in Review: Intellectual Property, Privacy, and Ethics
This week in class, we studied intellectual property and the privacy and ethical concerns that come with posting content on the Internet. Like many topics that we've studied in class thus far, this is very pertinent to the times we currently live in. For instance, I constantly think about the ramifications of parents posting pictures of their children who cannot give consent to the posting. I have seen some people post semi-naked pictures of their little ones and I just don't think it's okay. You may think it's cute now but what happens if a pedophile finds it? What happens if employers find it years later? There's a lot about online privacy that we as users can control and I think some people do not utilize security features properly.
The topics this week have definitely made me more interested in open educational resources. I was actually considering taking the OER class last semester but changed it at the last moment to take a class that counted towards my certificate. I wish that I had had the time to take it though! OERs are going to become even more popular as our day-to-day lives continue to change because of COVID-19, so I think that having knowledge about them would be to my advantage. I browsed through the OER Commons this week and was excited about what I saw and I know that my company, Wiley, has started to produce them. I'm hoping they will be a topic for an entire week later on in the semester!

I'm surprised by the parents who post pictures of their kids on public accounts. I can think of several ways these pictures can be taken and used for harm. The privacy and ethical concerns we learned about last week are something to definitely take into consideration when posting pictures. Even on private accounts your information isn't that private.
